Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde was sworn in as the 47th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on 18 November. President Ramnath Kovind administered him this oath. 63-year-old Justice Bobde will have a tenure of 17 months as CJI and will retire on 23 April 2021. Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi, who retired on November 17, recommended Justice Bobde's name.


Justice Bobde was born on 24 April 1956 in Nagpur. He earned his BA and LLB degree from the University of Nagpur in 1978. After this he enrolled as a lawyer from 13 September 1978 and started practicing in the Bombay High Court. In 1998, he was given the title of Senior Advocate. Bobde became the judge of the Bombay High Court on 29 March 2000. After this, on 16 October 2012, Justice Bobde became the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court and on 12 April 2013 became the Judge of the Supreme Court.

Bobde has been a part of the five-member constitution bench giving a historic verdict on the Ayodhya land dispute. Along with this, Justice Bobde chaired the three-member in-house inquiry committee that investigated the allegations of sexual harassment by a woman worker against Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. Bobde has also been involved in a bench headed by the Chief Justice, giving important decisions regarding the Aadhaar card.
